A heartbreaking fall for home favourite Alice Kinsella on the beam cost her a medal in the women’s all-around and took the shine off a sensational silver for Ondine Achampong.
The fine margins between success and failure were laid bare as Kinsella - who comes from Sutton Coldfield - was left in tears following a mistake at a packed-out Birmingham Arena.
Her error on the beam, an element she won gold on four years ago, dropped her out of contention as teammate 18-year-old Achampong finished second behind Australia’s Georgia Godwin.
Kinsella had looked primed for gold before the slip-up as her score of 11.000 proved fatal to her chances, leaving her in fourth place with a combined score of 50.600.

Just a two-minute walk from St. Paul’s tram station, a seven-minute walk from Snow Hill Station and 15 minutes from New Street Station, the festival site is filled with entertainment every day from midday until 11pm from now until August 8. And, best of all, entrance is free.

Here are the headlines from the day's action so far:
Birmingham teacher Jaswant Shergill says he hopes he has inspired his students despite feeling bittersweet about his fourth-place in the men’s 67kg final.
The 29-year-old left St Francis in Walsall in July ahead of starting at Aston Manor Academy in September and said the support he has received has been phenomenal.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it didn’t negatively affect me at all. The support from the people has meant a lot to me as I left my school at the end of July.
“I’m starting a new school in September and the pupils were really sentimental and touching with their support when I left, my students said they were going to watch. I hope they feel inspired and proud of what I did."

A Save the Bull petition has been launched to keep the enormous mechanical bull in Birmingham.
Charlotte Oak tweeted: "The Opening Ceremony Bull is truly breathtaking & it’s unthinkable that it might not have a future. I was genuinely not prepared for what a magnificent sculpture it would be."
Take a look at some of the names Brummies have come up with for the bull - including Ozzy and Arthur - here

Throughout our Commonwealth Stories podcast series, we’ve heard from people from across Birmingham who have shared their thoughts, feelings and concerns around the Commonwealth.
In our final episode, we look to the future and ask what legacy we’d like to see the Games leave on the city. Poet and presenter Sue Brown and researcher and educator Judith Bruce-Golding, tell us about their hopes for more open and honest conversations around what it means to be a Commonwealth citizen in the aftermath of the Games. And governance consultant Karl George MBE discusses his hopes for the future of, not just the area of Perry Barr where he grew up, but for the wider city too. Listen here
Birmingham mum-of-four Ruth Cumming cycled into Birmingham with her kids to soak up the festival atmosphere. She tweeted: "Enjoying the atmosphere here in Birmingham whilst the Commonwealth Games are in our city. We rode into the city centre to see the mechanical bull from the opening ceremony, find Perry the mascot, and go to a disco at the festival stage. No GSD though as the e-assist still broken."

Stourbridge star Charlotte Bardsley said she was proud of her women’s table tennis team despite their crushing 3-0 defeat to Wales in the Commonwealth Games quarter-final.
Bardsley, 20, lost the opening doubles 3-1 alongside Maria Tsaptsinos and was not required in the singles as Tin-Tin Ho and Tsaptsinos tasted defeat.
Bardsley had held her nerve excellently earlier in the day to help England progress to the knockout stages with a dramatic win over Nigeria that went to the final game but there was no repeat of those theatrics on Saturday night in Birmingham’s NEC.

Good news for Games ticket holders - you get free travel to your venue on local buses, trams and railway.
Here are all the rules you might need to know:
Our Commonwealth Games reporter Robson McCallister is back at Sandwell Aquatics Centre this morning - where Adam Peaty is back in the pool.
I'm back here at the Sandwell Aquatic Centre after Adam Peaty suffered a shock first defeat in eight years. After losing out on the men’s 100m breaststroke, Peaty got back in the pool with the men’s 50m breaststroke at 10.39am.
There were wholesome scenes at the Sandwell Aquatic Centre as Maldive’s Aishath Sausan finished last in the women’s 200m breaststroke heat. The athlete received the loudest cheer of the heat and applause from her rivals for her efforts.
Adam Peaty is through, finishing joint top with a time of 27.10 alongside South Africa’s Michael Houlie.
We don't want to think about it ending just yet, but when will the Commonwealth Games finish?
Lucky for us, there's still a week of sporting fun to be had and then a spectacular closing ceremony.
Have a look at all the details in the story below:
